Your Front Door Is Taking a Beating
Ice storms in January. Direct summer sun on a south-facing porch. Driving rain in April. The finish on your entry door is fading. The weatherstripping is getting crushed by wind. And every spring you fight flies at the back door because the old aluminum screen door stopped latching years ago.
Andersen storm doors fix all of that at once. A second barrier of extruded aluminum and tempered glass in front of your entry door — cuts wind, cuts UV, cuts air infiltration, and lets you open the inside door for ventilation without inviting the neighborhood in. Andersen makes them through EMCO, their wholly owned subsidiary, and they come in three tiers so the door matches your house and your budget.
Why Andersen Is the Storm Door Brand We Install
Plenty of storm doors come off a shelf at the big-box store for $150 and are done in two winters. Andersen is built for homes that are going to be here in 20 years. Here’s what separates their lineup.
Extruded Aluminum Frames With Reinforced Corners
Every Andersen storm door uses an extruded aluminum frame with reinforced corner brackets. The 10 Series (sold as 4000 at Home Depot) uses a 1-1/2-inch-thick frame with commercial-grade metal corner brackets that prevent sagging over time — the #1 complaint homeowners have about older storm doors. The 8 Series (3000 at Home Depot) is also 1-1/2 inches thick with reinforced corners. The 6 Series (2000) uses a 1-1/4-inch frame. None of them are hollow vinyl or stapled-together bent sheet metal.
A sagging storm door is almost always a frame problem, not a hinge problem. If you’ve ever had to shim or rehang a storm door because it won’t close clean anymore — the fix is a frame that doesn’t flex in the first place.
Clear Tempered, Low-E, and Low-E Insulating Glass
Every series includes tempered safety glass — 5× stronger than standard glass, so a thrown ball or a slammed door doesn’t become a liability issue. The 8 Series and 10 Series add Low-E glass with a metallic coating that reflects radiant heat back toward your home — 29% more energy efficient than clear glass. The 10 Series takes it further with Low-E insulating dual-pane glass filled with argon gas — 73% more efficient than single-pane clear. For a south- or west-facing entry that takes direct summer sun, that’s a real difference.
Low-E insulating on the 10 Series is the upgrade I recommend when the storm door is on a porch that gets hammered by afternoon sun. Less fading on the entry door paint, less heat coming in, better lifespan on everything the sun touches.
SmoothControl Plus Closer — 50% Stronger Than Standard Dual Closers
On the 10 Series, Andersen swaps the standard push-button closer for their SmoothControl Plus system — a two-part closer with a commercial-grade steel arm that’s 50% stronger than conventional dual closers. It’s easier to adjust, more consistent latching, and a proper hold-open feature that actually holds in the wind. This is the feature that pays for itself when the door is on a windy elevation — which in McHenry County, most of them are.
A good closer is the difference between a door that lives 15 years and one that’s fighting you every January. SmoothControl Plus is what you want if the storm door gets opened ten times a day.
Real Locks, Real Weatherstripping, No Shortcuts
Every Andersen storm door comes with a keyed deadbolt lock — the 10 Series adds a three-point locking system for real security. The 8 and 10 Series use premium double-layer weatherstripping on the top, bottom, and sides; the 6 Series uses single-layer. Hardware on the 8 and 10 comes with TarnishGuard finish protection. Between the deadbolt, the weatherstrip, and the extruded frame, you’re looking at a product that actually seals — not just a storm door that looks like it seals.
Most homeowners don’t realize the weatherstripping on a storm door wears out faster than the door itself. Double-layer stripping on the 8 and 10 Series is why those doors still feel tight after 10 winters.

Andersen builds every style across all three series. Pick the look that fits your house — then pick the tier that fits your budget and your climate exposure.

Why Buy Andersen Storm Doors Through IHC
Elite Certified, Locally Crewed, Two Decades of Front Porches
You can buy an Andersen storm door at Home Depot and stick it on yourself in an afternoon. Plenty of people do. But the doors that last 15 years aren’t the ones that got hung in a hurry with shims and caulk. They’re the ones where the rough opening got measured right, the Z-bar was cut clean, the weatherstripping seated properly, and the closer got adjusted after the frame settled.
That’s what we do. Same crews who install our Andersen windows and entry doors install our storm doors. We’re Andersen Elite Certified. We carry the 2-year installation warranty. And we’re a 15-minute drive from your house if something needs adjusting two years in.

Notes From the Field — What We Actually Install
I’ve installed storm doors on McHenry County homes in every elevation exposure imaginable. Our recommendation depends on two things: which direction the door faces, and how much traffic it sees. For south- or west-facing entries that take direct afternoon sun, I’m going to push the 10 Series (sold as 4000 at Home Depot) every time — Low-E insulating dual-pane glass with argon fill is 73 percent more efficient than clear single-pane, and SmoothControl Plus closer is 50 percent stronger than the standard dual closer. That combination handles heavy daily use without breaking down the way cheaper closers do.
For sheltered entries on the east or north side of the house that see less sun and less traffic, the 8 Series (3000) is the right answer. Bob Vila’s Best Overall pick, and the right balance of quality and investment for most homeowners. We install the 6 Series (2000) on rental properties and secondary entries where the budget is the driver. 30, 32, 34, and 36-inch widths cover the vast majority of residential openings at 80 inches tall, and Z-bar extender kits handle openings up to 1 inch wider than standard.
On the install side: we run Rapid Install 1 or the Pro Install System depending on the opening condition. Rapid Install is pre-assembled, under an hour for a clean opening. Pro Install is unassembled with an 81-inch Z-bar cut to length on site — that’s what we use for older McHenry County homes where the rough opening was never standard. Either way, the only callback issue I ever see on storm doors is closer adjustment, and we come back to adjust that in the first 30 days for free.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Andersen the same as EMCO? I keep seeing both names.
EMCO Enterprises is a wholly owned Andersen Corporation subsidiary. EMCO manufactures both Andersen-branded and EMCO-branded storm doors out of the same facilities, and EMCO supports the warranty for both brands. When you buy an Andersen storm door through IHC, you’re buying a product made by EMCO, backed by Andersen, and installed by an Andersen Elite Certified contractor.
Why does Andersen use two different series numbers?
Andersen sells storm doors through two channels: dealers (like IHC) and Home Depot. Dealers call them the 6 Series, 8 Series, and 10 Series. Home Depot calls the same three products the 2000, 3000, and 4000 Series. Confirmed equivalencies: 2000 = 6 Series, 3000 = 8 Series, 4000 = 10 Series. Same doors. Just different labels depending on where you buy.
Which series is best for my McHenry County home?
For most homes, the 8 Series (3000) — Bob Vila’s Best Overall pick — is the right balance of quality and investment. For south- or west-facing entries that take direct sun, or for any door that sees heavy daily use, the 10 Series (4000) with Low-E insulating glass and SmoothControl Plus closer is worth the step up. The 6 Series (2000) is appropriate for sheltered entries and secondary doors. The consultation is where we match the series to your specific opening.
What’s the difference between a full-view and a ventilating storm door?
A full-view storm door has glass from top to bottom — maximum light and view. Interchangeable models let you swap the glass panel for a screen panel in under a minute via Andersen’s Quick Change System. Retractable models keep the glass in place year-round with a screen that rolls up into the frame housing when not in use. A ventilating storm door (1/2 Light or 3/4 Light) has a solid lower embossed panel with an upper section that opens for airflow — a more traditional look that’s common on colonial and craftsman-style homes.
What warranty comes with Andersen storm doors?
Andersen storm doors manufactured after May 1, 2011 carry a lifetime limited warranty on the frame, hinges, and painted finish for as long as the original purchaser owns the home. Glass, insect screen, hardware, balancers, closers, and locksets are covered 5 years from date of purchase. Through IHC’s Andersen Elite Certified Contractor status, you also get an exclusive 2-year installation warranty on the work itself. Warranties transfer through Andersen’s Owner-to-Owner program when you sell the home.
Will a storm door fit my existing entry door?
In most cases, yes — Andersen storm doors come in the four standard widths (30″, 32″, 34″, 36″) at 80″ tall, which covers the vast majority of residential entries. The opening needs at least 3/4″ of flat trim surface width, 1″ of brick mold depth, and 2-1/2″ of door frame depth for the storm door to seat properly. Z-bar extender kits handle openings up to 1″ wider than standard. We confirm the measurements during the in-home consultation before you buy anything.
