That Old Patio Door Is Holding Your Whole House Back
You know the one. It sticks every time you open it. The track is filthy and no amount of cleaning fixes the grinding sound. Cold air pours in at the bottom all winter — you can feel it standing three feet away in January. The seal between the panes failed years ago, so you’re looking through fog at a backyard you can barely see. And the lock? You jiggle it and hope for the best.
That builder-grade sliding door was never designed for McHenry County winters. Andersen patio doors are. Sliding, French, hinged, multi-panel — every configuration, built to handle our freeze-thaw cycles and actually make you want to use the back of your house again. We install every one of them. And we have them in our Crystal Lake showroom right now.
Why We Install Andersen Patio Doors — And Nothing Else Compares
I’ve replaced hundreds of patio doors in McHenry County. Here’s why Andersen is what goes in every time — and what I’d put in my own house.
Dual Ball-Bearing Rollers — One-Finger Operation
Andersen gliding patio doors ride on dual ball-bearing rollers with self-contained leveling adjusters. That means a 200-pound glass panel glides open with one finger. No grinding, no dragging, no wrestling it off the track. The stainless steel sill cap resists rust, staining, and denting — the track doesn’t corrode and seize up after five Illinois winters like the aluminum track on your builder-grade door did.
I can’t tell you how many homeowners open an Andersen door for the first time in our showroom and say “wait, that’s it?” Yeah. That’s it. That’s how a patio door is supposed to work.
Low-E Glass With Argon Gas — Your Heating Bill Will Notice
A patio door is the single largest glass opening in most homes. If that glass isn’t doing its job, you’re hemorrhaging energy. Every Andersen patio door comes standard with Low-E4 glass and argon gas fill. Select configurations earn ENERGY STAR Most Efficient certification. Triple-pane options are available for homeowners who want maximum insulation — McHenry County sits in Climate Zone 5A, and our winters are no joke.
Your old patio door is probably the biggest energy hole in your house. One project on Foxford Drive in Cary — the homeowner told me they noticed the difference the first night. No more cold draft across the kitchen floor.
Multi-Point Locking — Not a Broomstick in the Track
Andersen hinged and French patio doors use multi-point locking systems that engage at multiple points along the full height of the door frame. Gliding doors use Andersen’s reach-out lock that pulls the panel tight against the jamb — plus anti-lift protection that prevents the panel from being pried up off the track. This isn’t a latch and a prayer. These are real security features engineered into the door.
When I ask homeowners what they don’t like about their current patio door, security always comes up. “We put a stick in the track.” That’s not a security plan. That’s a Band-Aid.
Every Style, Every Series — From Simple Slider to Wall of Glass
Andersen doesn’t make one patio door. They make dozens. Two-panel gliding doors in the 200 or 400 Series for a straightforward replacement. French hinged doors in the A-Series for wide-open entertaining. Four-panel contemporary sliders for that modern farmhouse look. Even MultiGlide doors that open up to 25 feet wide for a true indoor-outdoor living wall. Whatever your home needs, there’s an Andersen configuration for it — and we can install every one.
Most people come in thinking “patio door” means one thing. Twenty minutes in our showroom and they realize how many options they actually have. That’s the fun part.

5 Steps to a Perfect Patio Door Install
What does a proper patio door installation actually look like? This video walks through the five critical steps — the same process our crews follow on every Andersen installation.
Why Buy Andersen Patio Doors Through IHC
McHenry County’s Only Andersen Elite Certified Contractor
That certification isn’t a sticker on a truck. It means our crews are trained directly by Andersen, we follow their installation guidelines to the letter, and your patio door project comes with an exclusive 2-year installation warranty that is NOT available through uncertified installers or big-box stores. You can buy an Andersen patio door at Home Depot — same product. But you can’t buy the installation warranty there.
That installation warranty covers the work itself — separate from Andersen’s product warranty. Both warranties transfer automatically if you sell your home. No paperwork, no fee.

Notes From the Field — What We Actually Install
I’ve been replacing patio doors in McHenry County homes since 2005. The #1 reason homeowners call us about patio doors: the door sticks, drags, or won’t seal — almost always a failing roller or bottom track on a 15-to-20-year-old unit. Our most common replacement is a gliding patio door in the 400 Series or A-Series, 6 feet wide or 8 feet wide, with Low-E glass and the dual ball-bearing roller system. That roller system is the difference between one-finger operation and fighting the door every time someone wants to let the dog out.
For Zone 5A winters, I’m recommending Low-E 4 glass with argon fill as the default, and SmartSun glass when the door faces south or west. The multi-point locking system is standard on A-Series and E-Series patio doors and is a real security upgrade over the original “broomstick in the track” approach most 1990s doors shipped with. We’ve converted window openings into patio doors on several homes where the homeowner wanted to open up the back of the house to a deck — that’s a framing job, not just a door swap, and we handle the whole thing.
French hinged and multi-panel glass walls are the premium end of what we install. For a walk-out basement opening to a pool or lake, multi-panel is the right call. For most McHenry County backyards, the gliding door in the 400 or A-Series is what homeowners land on after we walk through the options together.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between a sliding patio door and a French patio door?
A sliding (gliding) patio door has panels that move horizontally on a track — no swing space required. A French patio door swings open on hinges, either inward or outward. Sliding doors save floor space and work great for tight layouts or deck access. French doors give you a wider opening when both panels are open and a more traditional look. Andersen makes both types across multiple series, so you’re not locked into one or the other. We help you figure out which fits your space during the in-home consultation.
Do Andersen patio doors come with built-in blinds?
Yes — select Andersen patio door models offer blinds-between-the-glass. The blinds sit inside the sealed glass unit, so they never collect dust, never get tangled, and stay out of the way of the door operation. They’re available on the 200 Series and A-Series patio doors. If you want a clean look without window treatments, it’s worth looking at.
How energy efficient are Andersen patio doors for Illinois winters?
Every Andersen patio door comes with Low-E glass and argon gas fill as standard. Select configurations — particularly in the A-Series — carry ENERGY STAR Most Efficient certification. Triple-pane glass is available for maximum insulation. McHenry County sits in Climate Zone 5A with serious winters, and these doors are engineered for exactly this kind of weather. The energy difference versus a 20-year-old builder-grade slider is night and day.
What warranty do I get with an Andersen patio door from IHC?
You get Andersen’s 20-year limited warranty on glass and 10-year limited warranty on non-glass components. Because IHC is an Andersen Elite Certified Contractor, you also get an exclusive 2-year installation warranty that covers the installation work itself — this is NOT available through big-box stores or uncertified installers. Both warranties transfer automatically if you sell your home.
Can I add a patio door where there’s currently a window?
Yes. We do window-to-door conversions regularly. It involves cutting the opening down to floor level, reframing, and installing the new door with proper flashing and weatherproofing. We recently did exactly this on Belfield Road in Crystal Lake — converted a window into a sliding glass door with pool access. It’s more involved than a straight replacement, but it’s absolutely doable and we handle the full scope.
How long does a patio door replacement take?
A standard patio door replacement — removing the old door and installing a new Andersen door in the same opening — typically takes one day. Larger projects like multi-panel installations or window-to-door conversions may take two days depending on framing and finishing work. We schedule everything in advance and our crews show up on time. No surprises.
