Woodstock’s Doors Are Famous

Woodstock is the only town we serve where a front door can be a tourist attraction. People still walk the Square looking for the spots where Groundhog Day was filmed in 1993, and the Victorian homes around it, some dating to the 1850s, wear their original entries like jewelry. Then a February wind comes off the brick pavers at 12 mph and pours straight through a 130-year-old door frame. Charm doesn’t weatherstrip.

Most of Woodstock isn’t Victorian, though. The subdivisions that ring the Square, Cobblestone from the late 1980s, Applewood from 1992-94, Victorian Village and Thoroughbred Estates from the same era, are all hitting 30 to 40 years old at the same time. Their builder-grade doors are aging on the same clock. I walk these streets and see fogged sidelight glass, rusted steel bottoms, and patio sliders that need two hands and a prayer.

And on August 27, 2024, this town took tennis-ball hail, 2.5 inches, one of the biggest hail reports McHenry County has logged in years. Doors caught it too: cracked lite frames, shattered storm-door glass, dented steel skins. We’ve been replacing doors in the county seat since 2005, and there has never been more reason to do it right than now.

The Woodstock Lineup

From a $3,000 patio slider to a five-figure estate entry, every product here is one we install with our own crews and stand behind from 15 minutes away.

Mahogany-tone craftsman fiberglass entry door with sidelights installed by IHC

ProVia Entry Doors →

Premium, built to order, and honestly priced like it: fiberglass $8,000 to $25,000, steel $5,000 to $15,000, installed. The woodgrain fiberglass finish matters in Woodstock more than most towns, because near the Square a plastic-looking door sticks out like a satellite dish on a Victorian. ProVia’s stain finishes read as real wood from the sidewalk.

✓ Premium Tier • Deep Customization

Albany Entry Doors →

Our Illinois-built value tier out of Bedford Park. Custom sizing without reframing, factory pre-finishing, honest insulation. With Woodstock’s median household income at $82,758, about $26K below Crystal Lake’s, Albany is often the smart-money answer here, and I have no problem saying so. A good door you can afford beats a great door you can’t.

✓ Value Tier • Built in Illinois

White Andersen gliding patio door with transom above, installed by Innovative Home Concepts

Andersen Patio Doors →

Gliding and hinged, 100 Series through A-Series, installed by the Andersen Elite Certified Contractor for this area. Elite is Andersen’s highest tier, and it exists for a reason: a patio door is a moving wall, and moving walls punish sloppy installation. Fibrex composite frames handle Woodstock’s 97-degree annual temperature swing without warping.

French & Hinged Patio Doors

For the homes around the Square and the customs out toward Bull Valley, a divided-light French door from Andersen or ProVia fits the architecture the way a slider can’t. Needs swing room and a sound sill. Multi-point locks come standard, which your insurance agent will appreciate more than your old single-latch slider.

✓ Andersen & ProVia

Andersen Entry Doors →

The flagship, from $10,000 per opening with no ceiling to speak of. Haldun Grove sale prices average $690,000 and Bull Valley Golf Club listings run seven figures; those entries should be built to the house, and these are. If the front of your home is the argument, this door wins it.

✓ Estate-Grade, Built to Order

Storm Doors →

ProVia and Andersen, $1,500 to $3,500 installed. After watching 2.5-inch hail work over this town in August 2024, I consider a quality storm door cheap armor for an expensive entry door. Full-view glass with retractable screens keeps the Square’s porch-sitting tradition alive in summer and blocks the freight-train wind in January.

Climate, Hail & Old Frames

What Kills Doors Here

Woodstock sits at roughly 942 feet of elevation, higher than most of the Chicago region, on open rolling terrain that gives winter wind a running start. The annual temperature ride goes from about -6°F to 91°F. Every door in town expands, contracts, and racks a little through dozens of freeze-thaw cycles each winter, and builder-grade doors from 1989 have been doing it for 37 years.

Hail is not hypothetical here. August 27, 2024 dropped 2.5-inch stones directly on Woodstock, with widespread damage to homes and vehicles. April 2, 2026 brought three tornadoes to the NWS Chicago area and a funnel cloud reported moving toward town, with a tree dropped against a Woodstock home. Steel door skins dent, glass lites crack, and storm doors sacrifice themselves. When we replace hail-hit doors, we spec impact-smarter glass packages and skins that shrug off the next round better.

Old frames are the sleeper problem. Around the Square, door frames from the 1800s have been painted 30 times and repaired twice. Out in Cobblestone and Victorian Village, 1980s builder frames were never great to begin with. Either way, the frame decides whether your new door seals, which is why we inspect and repair the opening on every job instead of wedging a new slab into old problems.

Water finds low doors. Woodstock threads between three waterways: the Kishwaukee River on the west and south, Silver Creek on the north and east, and Apple Creek down between Dean Street and Route 47. Flood-adjacent homes near any of them need thresholds set high and drained right, because a door sill that ponds after every storm rots on a schedule you can set a calendar by. We check grading and gutter discharge at the entry on every estimate in those corridors, since the door often takes blame the drainage earned.

And the heating math is simple. A leaky door bleeds warm air through a Woodstock winter that delivers 35 inches of snow. At this town’s median income, wasted therms hurt more than they do in wealthier zip codes. A modern foam-core door with compression weatherstripping is one of the cheapest comfort upgrades a house can get.

One logistical heads-up. The Route 47 widening, a $78.4 million project running through 2028, has the main north-south artery torn up between US 14 and IL 120. It doesn’t change what door you should buy. It does change how we route deliveries and crews, and we plan both around the cone zone so your install day stays your install day.

Step by Step

The Woodstock Door Process

Our crew on install day, and a rough opening prepped the way one should be. The part you never see is the part that keeps the draft out.

1

Free Assessment

We look at the slab, the frame, the sill, the flashing, and the trim, then tell you what actually needs replacing. Sometimes that’s less than you feared. If you’re in the historic district, we talk materials and approvals on day one so nothing surprises you at the Historic Preservation Commission. Everything lands in one itemized written number.

2

Choose With Your Hands

Samples at your kitchen table, or a 12-minute drive down Route 14 to our Crystal Lake showroom at 4410 IL-176, where full-size entry, patio, and storm doors stand on the floor. Slam a ProVia. Glide an Andersen E-Series. Ten seconds of touch beats an hour of brochure, every time.

3

Permits and the COA

City of Woodstock permit work runs through Development Services at 121 W. Calhoun Street, and we confirm door requirements there on every project. In the historic district, exterior changes need a Certificate of Appropriateness first, Category I administrative or Category II full review. We prepare that paperwork with you. Then your door goes into production, typically 4 to 6 weeks out.

4

Install, Inspect, Warranty

One visit for most openings. Old unit out, opening repaired, new unit set plumb and square, low-expansion foam, exterior sealed, trim finished. We cycle the door with you, verify the lock and the sweep, and put both the manufacturer warranty and our installation warranty in your hand in writing. The truck leaves; the phone number stays the same.

The Case for Us

Why Woodstock Hires IHC

Historic-District Fluency

Replacing a door near the Square isn’t a product decision, it’s a process: Certificate of Appropriateness, Downtown Design Review Guidelines, period-appropriate materials. We’ve worked in preservation-minded towns for 21 years and we walk that path with you instead of pretending it doesn’t exist. Contractors who skip the COA leave homeowners holding the violation.

Andersen’s Top Certification

Elite Certified Contractor is the highest tier Andersen awards, and we hold it. Your patio door install is backed by factory training, documented quality standards, and the full Andersen warranty, serviced by a company 12 minutes away rather than a national call queue. That difference shows up in year nine, when the roller needs adjusting.

Priced for This Market

Woodstock is a value-conscious town and we respect that. Two entry brands mean a real budget path (Albany steel from $5,000) and a real premium path (ProVia fiberglass to $25,000), quoted side by side with no shame either direction. Financing spreads any of it into monthly numbers that fit a family budget.

The Family Is Real

That’s a Wilborn kid quality-checking a new entry door. IHC has been the same family since 2005, women-led, one address on IL-176, one phone number. IL Roofing License #104.015093, A+ BBB. In a county-seat town that remembers everything, a 21-year reputation is the only marketing that matters.

Whole-Exterior Accountability

Door rot has upstream causes: gutters, flashing, siding. We install James Hardie and LP SmartSide siding, CertainTeed shingles plus F-Wave synthetic and Brava composite roofing, and seamless gutters, so the diagnosis doesn’t stop at the door frame and neither does the warranty conversation. One company answers for the whole wall.

Verifiable, Not Vague

402 Google reviews at 4.6 stars. A+ BBB. Two decades of jobs across McHenry County you can drive past. We’d rather point at receipts than adjectives, and we’re comfortable being compared to anyone who quotes against us. Ask the storm-chaser knocking after the next hail event for his 21-year review history and watch the pitch change.

Around Town

Doors by Woodstock Neighborhood

The county seat has five distinct door markets. Here’s how I read them after two decades of driving Route 47 into town.

Historic Square District

Victorians, Queen Annes, and Italianates from the 1850s onward, many under Historic Preservation Commission jurisdiction. Doors here need a Certificate of Appropriateness and materials that respect the streetscape near the Opera House and Old Courthouse. ProVia’s wood-look fiberglass and Andersen E-Series custom colors thread that needle: period face, modern seal.

Cobblestone & Victorian Village

Late-1980s townhome and condo communities off Route 47 with builder-grade everything now 35+ years old. Victorian Village has HOA design standards through Westward360, and we coordinate approvals as part of the job. Steel entry units and Andersen 100 Series patio doors deliver the biggest gain per dollar in these floor plans.

Applewood & Victorian Country

Early-to-mid 1990s single-family streets east of McConnell Road and beyond. First-generation doors here are past 30 years: foggy lites, worn thresholds, sliders that grind. This is the sweet spot for a fiberglass entry upgrade paired with a 400 Series patio door while the opening is still sound and the job is still simple.

Westwood Lakes & Thoroughbred Estates

Bigger lots, 1974-2010 build range, half-acre to 3-acre parcels southwest and northeast of the Square. Mature trees mean falling limbs, and I’ve replaced more than one door here after a storm did the demolition free of charge. These homes carry sidelight-and-transom entries beautifully, and the 2024 hail made glass upgrades an easy call.

Bull Valley Corridor

Haldun Grove, Ponds of Bull Valley, Sanctuary, and the Golf Club community, Woodstock’s premium tier with homes to 9,000+ square feet. Andersen entry doors from $10,000 and A-Series patio walls to $25,000 belong here, matched to the architecture rather than forced onto it. These are the projects where our Elite certification does its loudest work.

Sweetwater & The Sonatas

2003-2017 Centex and ranch-style communities north of Route 120 and toward the north side. The oldest of these are crossing 20 years, right when builder patio doors start dying. An early swap to a 100 or 400 Series is cheaper than waiting for frame damage, and single-level Sonatas homes make install day quick.

Twelve Minutes Away

Touch the Doors First

The Andersen E-Series patio display at our showroom. Worth the short drive from the Square.

Our showroom at 4410 IL-176, Suite 1 in Crystal Lake is a straight shot from Woodstock down Route 14, about 12 minutes from the Square. Entry doors, patio doors, and storm doors stand assembled on the floor. Operate them, compare them, and picture them on your house before anyone writes a number down.

We’re your neighbors, serving the county seat from the same address since 2005. Make a morning of it: farmers market on the Square on a Tuesday or Saturday, then doors on the way home. Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, no appointment needed.

Dollars and Sense

The Value Math

A door is one of the few exterior projects where you can count the payback on your fingers. Here is how I walk Woodstock homeowners through it.

Dark craftsman fiberglass entry door with sidelights, interior view, installed by Innovative Home Concepts
A craftsman fiberglass entry with sidelights. The style Woodstock buyers ask for by name.

Comfort you stop paying for. A failed door seal leaks heated air through all 35 inches of a Woodstock snow season. New foam-core doors with compression weatherstripping close that leak permanently, and in a town where the median household earns $82,758, wasted therms are not an abstraction. The savings are monthly and they never stop.

Resale that shows from the curb. Woodstock’s median sale price hit $320,000 with price per square foot up 8.1% in a year. Buyers touring a 1990s Applewood two-story judge the front door in the first five seconds, and appraisers notice fogged sidelights too. An entry that looks right near a town square this photographed is not vanity. It’s positioning.

Hail resilience you only buy once. After the 2.5-inch stones of August 2024, I spec fiberglass skins and modern glass packages because they take the county’s weather without flinching. A $1,500 to $3,500 storm door protecting a $12,000 entry is the cheapest bodyguard money hires.

Financing that fits a family budget. Every estimate shows the cash price and the monthly option side by side. Plenty of Woodstock families phase it: entry door now, patio door after the holidays. I recommend whatever sequence your leakiest opening dictates, not whatever pads the invoice, and our crew treats a $3,000 slider swap with the same care as a Bull Valley showpiece.

One more piece of honest math: doors and windows fail on the same clock, because the same builders installed them the same year. If your door is done, it’s worth having us look at the windows during the same visit. One assessment, one plan, one crew you already know.

Common Questions

Woodstock Door FAQs

How much does a fiberglass entry door cost in Woodstock, IL?

A fiberglass entry door in Woodstock runs $8,000 to $25,000 per opening installed, from ProVia or Albany. Steel runs $5,000 to $15,000, and Andersen entry doors start at $10,000 with no fixed top. The installed price includes removal, disposal, the new unit with hardware, and trim work. Sidelights, transoms, and decorative glass are what push a quote toward the high end, not hidden fees. Financing is available.

Do I need approval to replace a door in the Woodstock Square Historic District?

Yes. Exterior alterations to properties in the Woodstock Square Historic District require a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic Preservation Commission before work begins. Routine changes may qualify for Category I administrative approval; bigger alterations take Category II full review under the Downtown Design Review Guidelines. We prepare the application with you and spec period-appropriate doors that pass review. The city’s Facade Improvement Program can sometimes help fund qualifying exterior upgrades too.

Can hail actually damage a door?

Absolutely, and Woodstock proved it on August 27, 2024, when 2.5-inch hail hit town. Hail that size dents steel door skins, cracks glass lites and sidelights, and destroys storm-door glass and screens. Fiberglass doors resist denting far better than steel, and modern dual-pane door glass outperforms 30-year-old single-pane lites. If your door took hail damage, we’ll assess it honestly during a free estimate, including whether replacement beats repair.

What’s the best door upgrade for a 1990s Woodstock subdivision home?

For Applewood, Victorian Country, and Thoroughbred Estates homes, the highest-impact combination is a fiberglass entry door ($8,000 to $25,000) plus an Andersen 400 Series patio door ($4,000 to $12,000+). Those two openings are where 1990s builder quality fails first and where buyers look hardest at resale. If budget forces a choice, fix whichever door leaks air worse; our assessment will tell you which one that is.

How long does door replacement take in Woodstock?

About 4 to 6 weeks from contract to install for the build, then usually a single day on site per opening. Historic-district projects add Certificate of Appropriateness time up front, which we build into the schedule. With the Route 47 widening running through 2028, we also plan deliveries around the construction zone so your install day isn’t hostage to a flagger on Route 47 at 7 AM.

Can I finance a door project?

Yes. Financing is available on every IHC door project, from a $1,500 storm door to a full entry-plus-patio package. Woodstock homeowners often pair financing with a phased plan: entry door this year, patio door next. You’ll see the monthly numbers alongside the cash price in the same written estimate, so the comparison is honest and the decision stays yours.
