Old Windows Costing You Money? What McHenry County Homeowners Need to Know

Windows

You know that cold spot you feel every time you walk past your living room windows in January? That’s not normal. And it’s probably costing you a lot more than you think.

Drafts and Cold Spots Near Windows

Stand next to your windows on the next cold day. Not right against the glass — stand about a foot away. If you can feel cold air radiating off the window, or if there’s a noticeable temperature drop compared to the center of the room, your windows aren’t doing their job anymore.

Single-pane windows are the worst offenders, and there are still plenty of them in older homes around McHenry and Woodstock. But even double-pane windows lose their effectiveness over time. The seal between the panes degrades, the gas fill (usually argon) leaks out, and you’re left with a window that insulates about as well as a single pane.

Here’s a number that puts this in perspective: a single-pane window has an R-value of about 0.9. A modern double-pane, low-E, argon-filled window has an R-value of 3.0 to 4.0. That’s a 3-4x improvement in insulation, from one component of your house. When you have 15-20 windows, the cumulative effect on your heating bill is massive.

Homes built in the 1960s-1980s in neighborhoods like Edgebrook in Crystal Lake or the older sections of Cary near the train station almost always have original or early-replacement windows that are well past their useful life.

Condensation Between the Panes

This is the one sign that gives you a definitive answer. If you see fog, moisture, or a milky haze between the two panes of glass in a double-pane window, the seal has failed. Period.

There’s no way to repair a failed seal. Some companies will try to sell you a “defogging” service where they drill a small hole, clean the inside, and reseal it. That’s a temporary band-aid that rarely lasts more than a year or two. The seal failed for a reason, and drilling a hole in the glass doesn’t fix that reason.

Failed seals mean the argon gas between the panes has escaped and been replaced by regular air. Regular air conducts heat about 30% more efficiently than argon, so your window is now a worse insulator. The moisture you see is condensation forming because the inner surface temperature has changed. Beyond the energy loss, that trapped moisture can promote mold growth in the window frame, especially in wood-framed windows.

One thing worth knowing: seal failure doesn’t always happen because of age. Poor original installation, excessive direct sun exposure, and our extreme temperature swings (from -15°F in January to 95°F in July — a 110-degree range) all stress window seals. That’s why we see seal failures in windows that are only 8-10 years old sometimes, especially on south and west-facing walls.

Windows That Won’t Open or Close Properly

Double-hung windows that stick, slide back down after you open them, or won’t lock properly are more than an annoyance. They’re a safety issue and an energy issue.

Wood-framed windows swell and contract with humidity changes. Over decades of McHenry County seasons — humid summers, dry winters, and everything in between — that repeated movement warps the frame. Once the frame is out of square, the sash won’t slide properly, the locking hardware won’t align, and the weatherstripping can’t make a tight seal.

Vinyl and aluminum windows develop different problems. The balance mechanisms (springs or block-and-tackle systems that hold the window in position) wear out over time. When the balances go, the window won’t stay open, or it takes real effort to move. Replacement balances are available for some windows, but on older models, the parts are often discontinued.

If you find yourself propping windows open with a stick or a book, that window isn’t sealing properly when it’s closed, either. You’re losing conditioned air 24/7.

Visible Damage to Frames and Glass

Some window problems are impossible to ignore. Rotting wood frames. Cracked or chipped glass. Paint peeling off the exterior trim in sheets. These are the signs that make you stop and think, “yeah, those need to go.”

Rotting frames are especially common on the north side of homes where snow piles up against the house and keeps the wood wet for months. We’ve replaced windows in homes off Bull Valley Road where the bottom rail of the frame was completely gone — just soft, crumbling wood that you could push your thumb through. At that point, the window isn’t keeping anything out: not cold air, not rain, not insects.

Cracked glass is an obvious replacement trigger, but even small chips and scratches weaken the pane and can turn into full cracks when the temperature drops fast. A window that survived the summer with a small chip can crack overnight in the first hard freeze of October.

Rising Heating and Cooling Bills

Windows account for 25-30% of residential heating and cooling energy use, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. In a home with older windows, that number can be even higher.

Let’s put some real numbers on it. The average McHenry County homeowner spends about $2,200-$2,800 per year on heating and cooling. If your windows are responsible for 30% of that energy loss, you’re spending $660-$840 per year heating and cooling the outdoors through your windows alone.

ENERGY STAR-rated replacement windows can reduce that energy loss by 25-40%, depending on what you’re replacing. That’s a savings of $165-$335 per year. Over the 20-25 year lifespan of quality replacement windows, that’s $3,300-$8,375 in energy savings. Not enough to pay for the windows entirely, but a meaningful offset.

The bigger wins come from comfort. No more cold spots. No more drafts. Your furnace cycling less often. Those quality-of-life improvements are harder to put a dollar figure on, but every homeowner who’s replaced old windows will tell you — the difference is immediate and dramatic.

Andersen vs. Vinyl: Picking the Right Window

This is the question we get asked most often, and the honest answer is: it depends on your situation.

Andersen windows are a premium product. Their 400 Series and Renewal by Andersen lines offer Fibrex composite frames that won’t rot, warp, or need painting. They carry strong warranties and have the brand recognition that helps resale value. For homeowners in Barrington, Crystal Lake’s Lake Shore Drive area, or other higher-value neighborhoods, Andersen is often the right choice because the investment aligns with the home’s value.

Quality vinyl replacement windows have improved enormously over the last decade. Modern vinyl windows with multi-chamber frames, low-E glass, and argon fill perform very close to premium composites in energy efficiency. They cost 30-50% less than Andersen and they’re essentially maintenance-free. For a 15-year-old home in Huntley or Algonquin where you need to replace 20 windows, vinyl might save you $8,000-$12,000 compared to Andersen while delivering 90% of the performance.

Both are solid choices. The wrong choice is the cheapest builder-grade window you can find — those will be back to causing problems in 8-10 years. Our window cost guide lays out the numbers for both options so you can compare with real pricing.

When to Pull the Trigger

If you’re seeing one sign from this list, keep an eye on it. If you’re seeing three or more, it’s time to start getting quotes. And if you’ve got failed seals plus drafts plus windows that won’t stay open — you should have done this two years ago. (No judgment. Most people wait too long. It’s human nature.)

The best time to order replacement windows in McHenry County is late winter or early spring. Lead times for custom-sized windows run 4-8 weeks, and you want installation done before the heat of summer or the cold of fall. Planning in February means installation in April or May, which is ideal weather for the work.

Financing is available for window projects, which makes it easier to replace all your windows at once rather than doing them in stages. Doing them all at once is cheaper per window, ensures a consistent look, and means one disruption instead of three or four.
