5 Signs Your McHenry County Home Needs New Siding

Siding

Your siding is the first thing people see when they pull into your driveway. It’s also the only thing standing between your walls and McHenry County’s brutal weather. When it starts failing, the signs aren’t always obvious.

Sign 1: Peeling, Cracking, or Warping

Walk around your house and look at the siding on your north and west walls first. Those faces take the worst beating from wind-driven rain and snow. If you see paint peeling in sheets, horizontal cracks running along boards, or sections that have started to bow outward, you’ve got a problem that’s only going to get worse.

Here’s why this happens so often in our area. McHenry County goes through over 100 freeze-thaw cycles between November and March. Water gets into tiny cracks during the day when temperatures rise above freezing, then expands at night when it drops back down. Each cycle makes the crack a little bigger. By spring, what started as a hairline split is now a gap you can fit a fingernail into.

We’ve pulled off warped siding from homes in Lakewood and found the sheathing underneath completely saturated. At that point, you’re not just replacing siding. You’re replacing sheathing, maybe even studs.

What to do: Don’t wait for spring. If you see cracking or warping now, get it assessed before the next freeze-thaw season makes it worse. Modern James Hardie fiber cement and LP SmartSide engineered wood are both designed to handle these cycles far better than the builder-grade vinyl that went on most homes in the ’90s and 2000s.

Sign 2: Your Energy Bills Keep Climbing

This one sneaks up on you. You blame the furnace. You blame ComEd rates. You caulk around your windows. But your heating bill in January is still $380 when it used to be $260.

Failing siding is one of the most overlooked causes of high energy bills. When siding cracks, warps, or pulls away from the house, it creates gaps in your building envelope. Cold air gets in. Warm air gets out. Your furnace runs longer. Simple as that.

The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that air leaks account for 25-30% of heating and cooling costs in the average home. Siding that’s pulling away from the wall or has deteriorating seams is one of the biggest sources of those leaks. On a typical 2,000 sq ft home in Crystal Lake or Woodstock, that can mean $600-$900 per year in wasted energy costs.

What to do: On a cold, windy day, hold your hand near the base of your exterior walls from inside. Feel a draft? That’s air pushing right through. New siding installed with a proper house wrap and tight seams can cut those losses dramatically. Check our siding cost guide to understand what the investment looks like — and remember that energy savings offset the cost every single year.

Sign 3: Mold, Mildew, or Rot at Seams

Black or green streaks at siding seams aren’t just ugly. They’re a warning sign that moisture is getting behind your siding and staying there.

McHenry County averages about 38 inches of rainfall per year, plus another 35 inches of snow (NOAA NWS Chicago). That’s a lot of water hitting your walls. Good siding channels it down and away. Failing siding traps it at seams and edges, creating the damp conditions where mold and rot thrive.

Pay close attention to areas around windows, doors, and anywhere two pieces of siding meet. Also check behind your downspouts — we see a lot of rot in those spots because splashback keeps the siding wet for hours after a rain. Homes in neighborhoods with mature trees, like parts of Cary along the Fox River or older sections of McHenry near Petersen Park, tend to have more shade and less airflow, which makes this problem worse.

What to do: If you see surface mildew, clean it and monitor it. But if you press on the siding and it feels soft or spongy, moisture has already gotten behind it. That needs professional attention before it spreads to your wall structure. New siding with proper flashing and drainage is the permanent fix.

Sign 4: Fading That Won’t Wash Off

Every homeowner has tried power-washing their siding to make it look new again. Sometimes it works great. But when your siding still looks dull and washed-out after a thorough cleaning, you’re looking at UV damage, not just dirt.

UV radiation breaks down the pigments and the material itself over time. Vinyl siding is especially prone to this — the plasticizers that keep it flexible degrade in sunlight, making the material brittle. That faded section on your south-facing wall isn’t just cosmetic. It’s structurally weaker than the day it was installed.

Most builder-grade vinyl siding starts showing noticeable UV damage after 12-15 years. If your home was built in the Huntley or Algonquin building booms of 2004-2008, you’re right in that window now. Higher-end products like James Hardie ColorPlus use baked-on finishes that resist fading for 15+ years, and premium vinyl options have come a long way since those builder-grade panels.

What to do: Fading alone doesn’t mean you need to replace tomorrow. But it does mean the material is aging, and you should be watching for the other signs on this list. If you’re seeing fading plus any other symptom, it’s time to start planning.

Sign 5: Bubbling or Blistering Under the Surface

Bubbles or blisters under your siding are the most alarming sign on this list because they mean moisture is already trapped inside your wall assembly. This isn’t surface-level. It’s structural.

Blistering happens when heat or moisture gets between the siding and the sheathing, with nowhere to go. In summer, a south-facing wall can reach 150°F on the surface. If there’s any moisture trapped behind the siding, it turns to steam and pushes the material outward. You end up with soft, raised spots that look almost like the siding has a rash.

I’ll be honest — by the time you see blistering, you’ve usually got some underlying damage that needs more than just new siding. But the good news is that catching it now still saves you thousands compared to ignoring it for another two or three years. The longer moisture sits against your sheathing, the more you’ll spend on repairs when you finally do address it.

What to do: Don’t pop the blisters or try to flatten them. Call a siding contractor who will pull a section and inspect what’s behind it. If the sheathing is solid, you’re in good shape — new siding with a proper moisture barrier will solve the problem. If there’s rot, you need to know that now, not later.

What Should You Do Next?

If you spotted one or two of these signs, you’re probably a year or two away from needing replacement. Use that time to get quotes and explore materials. If you’re seeing three or more, the timeline is shorter.

The best time to replace siding in McHenry County is late spring through early fall, when temperatures stay above 40°F consistently. Some materials, like James Hardie fiber cement, need warmer temperatures for proper installation. Planning now means you won’t be scrambling for contractor availability in June.

We offer flexible financing options that make it easier to move forward when you’re ready, rather than waiting until the damage forces your hand and costs more to fix.
